Dear Pre-Candidates,
I hope you enjoyed the December 6th gathering as much as I did. One goal was to let you know how much the leaders in our district value the National Board Certification process. We are very lucky to have so much support from our district leaders. For a long time, that was lacking and it is so gratifying to see the difference it has made. Hopefully, hearing from Dr. Baracy, Katy Cavanaugh, and Nancy Creighton Brown as well as Andi Fourlis and Dr. Anne Hanson helped you get a glimpse of the support that is available.
Hearing Kathy Wiebke is always inspiring. She is the voice of NBC in Arizona. Without Kathy none of us would have come so far, nor would there be the number of candidates, or level of support that exists now. And she is never satisfied with the status quo! She is always looking for more, new, and better ways to support candidates. If you decide to become a candidate, you will gain a new appreciation of her efforts.
I would love to hear what you took away from the celebration. What was helpful for you to learn or hear about? Did the gathering influence your feelings about National Board Certification? If so how? I hope you'll post a response to share.
I wish all of you a wonderful, safe, and healthy winter break. We will meet again on January 17, 2008.

Nice Blog :)
There was great energy--It was a shot of inspiration-- so many teachers focussed on what our professions supposed to be about--finding the best way to make learning meaningful to kids----I don't think I heard the word AIMS mentioned once (hope I'm not offending anyone) but even my principal was excited about the direction of the room---it made me think of Alice's Restaurant--Can you imagine a group of people- I mean can you imagine a whole room room full of people---I mean can you imagine teachers and principals and superintendents all getting together and actually talking about the best way to make learning meaningful for kids---I'd call it a movement and that's exactly what I felt---the Sctottsdale School District National Board Movement---It was groovy-
RIGHT ON! OUTTA SIGHT! I'M GETTIN DOWN ON IT..KNOW WHAT I MEAN?
Yes, Steve, that is what National
Board is all about and it is exciting to be involved with the discoveries it helps teachers make about themselves and their teaching practice.
Where could it lead????? That is the question!
The meeting confirmed for me that I've made the right choice in pursuing National Board Certification. Whether I make it or not, I'm going to come out of the process a much better teacher with a renewed sense of excitement and purpose. To Steve's point about not hearing the word AIMS mentioned once, I'd like to see the increasing number of NBC teachers incite a nationwide movement towards a new era in "accountability". One that allows teachers to use developmentally appropriate, valid assessments that truly guide and improve instruction instead of taking away from it as so many of the current assessments do.
Listening to the variety of speakers was great because it was evident that people who become Nationally Board Certified are teachers who care. It definitely made me feel like I have made the right choice in choosing to participate in this certification program. It really touched me when the speaker said that she shared with her kids that “she did her best”. Unfortunately, especially with the students that I work with, their best isn’t good enough to allow them to pass their classes or do exceptionally well on tests. However, it is the best that they can do and because of this, they receive accommodations so that they can be successful. It touched me that she did the best that she could do and still thought she had not passed the test. It makes me a little nervous that she seemed so amazing and yet the process was so challenging for her. I realize that NBC is a rigorous process and I truly hope that it is attainable.
Hello. This post is likeable, and your blog is very interesting, congratulations :-). I will add in my blogroll =). If possible gives a last there on my site, it is about the CresceNet, I hope you enjoy. The address is http://www.provedorcrescenet.com . A hug.
I wish I could say I was inspired. I was too busy trying to keep my normally so quiet and sleepy (at that time of day) quiet that I really didn't hear much of what was said.
Sorry.
Wow! I felt both excitement and apprehension. These people have done so much, they seem like super teachers. I always thought I did OK in my classroom, but listening to the presenters, I was wowed by their enthusiasm and where they went with it. These are really people to emulate. I hope I can achieve half of what they have, especially Kathy Wiebke. This whole National Board endeavor is daunting. Wow, and I’ll leave it at that.
Good for people to know.
